The Bible book of Zephaniah is written by Zephaniah, and where it was written was in Judah. Finally it was completed in the year before 648 B.C.E. All occurs in the reign of King Josiah of Judah ( 659- 629 B.C.E), at that time when Baal worship was the running rampantly and “the foreign god priests ” were taking the lead in this unclean worship, the people of Jerusalem must have been startled by the message proclaimed by the prophet Zephaniah. The prophet Zephaniah was descendant of king Hezekiah of the royal house of Judah. He was really worried about the condition of the nation of Israel disobedience. ( Zeph. 1:1,4)

His message was one of doom. God;s people, the nation of Israel had gone astray from the direction of Jehovah their true God. If they listened to him he is ever ready to restore them back to true worship once again and bless them so that might serve as ” a name and a praise among all the peoples of the earth.” ( Zeph. 3:20) The prophet Zephaniah pointed out that can only happened through divine intervention from Jehovah so that’ ” They would be concealed in the day of Jehovah’s anger.” (Zeph. 2:3).

The name Zephaniah in Hebrew is called Tsephan.yah’ , which means ” Jehovah Has Concealed ( Treasured Up”)! Zephaniah effort to set the path of this people Israel bears fruit. The King Josiah, who ascended the throne at the age of eight , started in 12th year of his reign ” to cleanse Judah and Jerusalem.” He eliminated false worship and repaired the ” house of our God Jehovah,” and re-instituted the celebration of the Passover. ( 2 Chron., chaps. 24,35) King Josiah reforms were only temporary, however, for he was succeeded by three of his sons, and one of his grandsons, all of whom did ” bad things in the eyes of Jehovah.” ( 2 Chron. 36:1-12)

This was all in fulfillment of of Zephaniah’s words which says: ” I will give attention to the king, and to those who are filling the house of their master with violence and deception.” ( Zeph. 1:8,9) The above demonstrated that the words of Jehovah came to Zephaniah before 648 B.C.E., the 12th year of Josiah. Not only does the first verse identify him as speaking in Judah but the detailed knowledge he show of the localities and customs of Jerusalem argue for his staying in Judah.

The message contain in the book of Zephaniah is very threatening and consoling. For the most part, it centers around the day of Jehovah, a day of terror that is imminent, but at the same time, it tells us that Jehovah will restore a humble people that ” actually take refuge in the name of Jehovah.” ( 1:1,7-18; 3:12)

In the year 607 B.C.E after Zephaniah had foretold about Jerusalem destruction it came true about 40 years as he prophesied.
